Things To Know When Choosing A Breeder
Cleanliness
- Look for cleanliness and the conditions not only where the dog resides, but the
property overall, both inside and out. Ribbons and
awards for showing dogs are not necessarily indicative of a
good breeder. A dog that is well taken care of should be in a
clean, well maintained, healthy environment. South Side Dogs
is not only AKC and NYSDA inspected, but we have the approval
of Royal Canin which has visited our property as well. Of
course, we far exceed any of the standards set forth by the
aforementioned organizations because the owner of South Side
is personally driven, he wants to be the best and provide the
best for all his dogs.
Health -
The health and well being of your dog should be first and
foremost and you can't always know just from looking at a
puppy. Don't take just anyone's word for it. South Side dogs
are visited regularly by a licensed veterinarian, are
administered all necessary shots, current with all worming
protocol, guaranteed to be in good health and guaranteed
against genetic defects. Owning a dog is an emotional, serious
undertaking and we want you to have a lifetime of happiness,
gratification and fulfillment.
Food -
Ask about the food they are given; is it natural, is it dry,
is it from a can, what is the nutritional value? The answer
will help you determine how much the breeder really cares. All
of our dogs are fed natural food by Royal Canin, one of the
most respected, reputable, nutritional brands of premium dog
food in the world.
Socialization
- A dog's behavior can be a sign of the way they are treated
and socialized. All of our dogs get along well with people and
other dogs because they are exposed to various scenarios that
help them become mentally healthy and stable. Don't just play
with your puppy, interact with the larger dogs and see how they
behave and react to you.
Genetics
- Often you can obtain a healthy puppy that will never have
problems from bloodlines that are ordinary. South Side does
their utmost in breeding champion dogs to help ensure the best
the breed has to offer. Our dogs are show quality, but we
believe their true value is in the joy they bring to our
lives day in and day out.
Don't rely solely
on a recommendation or what someone tells you. Objectivity
from the source is important. For instance, often a network of
dog owners or club will refer you to someone in their
organization and possibly dissuade you from a breeder outside
of their "circle". This type of conduct should throw up
a red flag immediately. There are good breeders both in and
out of these alliances. South Side urges you to investigate
and visit any breeder you are interested in because we
know it helps you make an informed decision and will reveal
the most important aspects about them. We highly discourage
purchasing from a breeder that is willing to ship your dog. A
breeder should consider a dog's well being a priority, and the
process of shipping is potentially very disturbing for an
animal. We also think it's essential for the breeder to meet
with the future parent(s). South Side Dogs can provide you
with a wealth of testimonials and references, but a visit to
the estate to see our dogs first hand is worth way more than
any words.
